Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer: Let’s Talk Bees

As spring winds down and summer approaches, it’s time to take a closer look at some of our seasonal co-inhabitants: bees — nature’s pollinators and planters!

From many perspectives, bees aren’t viewed positively. But I’m here to change that, or at least try.

Most people know bees pollinate flowers, but many don’t realize they do much more than that. Bees play a critical role in the growth of many of the foods we eat, including fruits, vegetables and nuts. Without bees, much of what we consume would not be available.

Over the past decade, the rise of chemicals and shortcuts in plant growth has contributed to a dramatic decline in the bee population. There are many efforts to combat this issue, here's what you can do:

  • Use natural planting practices — avoid modern chemicals that are harmful to bees.

  • Plant native seeds — bees are most effective when pollinating plants they’ve evolved with over time.

  • Try dual-use, plantable items — seed paper cards made from recycled paper and seeds that can grow into flowers that provide safe feeding spaces.

  • Support bee preservation efforts — plant trees, donate to bee-friendly organizations, and support habitat preservation.

  • Stay informed and spread awareness — education is key to protecting our remaining colonies.

You can also support female refugee artisans in Baton Rouge and South African artisans by purchasing handmade bee earrings HERE and plantable seed paper cards HERE.

Let’s welcome summer with a commitment to the creatures who help it bloom.
